During Burnley Health Mela, seventy-one (71) individuals utilised the health screening facilities offered at the event. Summary results of these tests show

  • Of twenty three (23) without diagnosed metabolic disease, eleven (11) were found to be overweight whereas six (6) were obese. Five (5) individuals were found to be pre diabetic. Regarding cardiovascular issues, nine (9) were found to be pre hypertensive or hypertensive. In addition four (4) were diagnosed with dyslipidaemia. All these individuals were counselled and where appropriate referred to their general practitioners for follow-ups. In addition, there were 17 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and were being looked after by their doctors.
  • Some date was missing in 13 individuals and are not included in above statistics.

Health MOTs were carried out by students from the University of Lancashire’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, and Americal University of Caribbean’s (AUC) School of Medicine. These students were supervised and supported by Dr (Mrs) Alpana Asurlekar, Senior Lecturer and Dr Rajesh Asurlekar Lecturer in Medical Sciences of University of Lancashire’s School of Medicine and Dentistry and Ms Ann Urnstom Senior Lecturer and the School Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) Coordinator in the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Lancashire.

Blood tests were carried out by staff from the Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s past and present staff and members of the Blood Drop Team.
